IT’S GREAT TO FIND MY OWN WAY TO USE BIRCH BARK AND GIVE TO IT A NEW LIFE WITH VARIOUS APPLICATIONS.

HANDS IN THE WOOD

Seasonal variations inspire me a lot. I also love a real fire. In the dim light of dark winter, I enjoy sharing a warm, smoke-filled campfire with friends. The Loistava–lamp was born of my desire to bring the campfire inside the home.

In the springtime I quietly note how skillfully birds build their nests. They are so light and yet so durable. The Pesä-lamp creates an airy, light-filled dwelling that reflects the various shapes around it.

During summertime, the lake’s surface dazzles the eyes. In the wind, birch leaves play with their own shadows. The mind relaxes. The Hetket-curtain is like a reminder of the shadowy leaves of the summer birches.

In the autumn, the sunlight shines through the trees. The Leikki-space divider gives freedom to light, whether inside or outside the home.

I grew up in the countryside with birch forests all around the family house. When I work with birch bark, everything reminds me of my childhood, of the smells of fresh wood and resin from my father’s sawmill. Today, I do my work in my workshop, surrounded by trees near a lake. As a fashion designer, I naturally use a sewing machine for assembling the strips of birch bark.

Working with birch bark is a step-by-step process, from the birch surface to the finished design product. This reminds me of how nature also takes its time and follows its own rhythm. Wood is an ecological, renewable, natural resource. The birch bark comes from nearby forests and is taken directly by hand from the trees.

All my creations are unique.
